Near the site where Sam Houston's army defied the odds some 173 years ago, the economic
odds are taking a beating from one of the area's most successful golf courses.
Affordable courses come with a stigma attached that affordability usually doesn't translate to quality. Lower green fees mean less revenue which translates to a lower level of maintenance, which manifests itself in a layout lacking the lushness associated with better courses.
But Battleground at Deer Park breaks that economic model by offering a quality course that attracts enough business that the course can be maintained to high standards even while charging affordable prices. For that reason, Battleground was rated the No. 1 course in the under $30 price range in a survey conducted recently on Chron.com.
Battleground, whose regular prices often top the $30 mark but becomes more affordable with readily available online specials, earned 28.5 percent of the votes to easily outdistance Bay Forest Golf Course (16.5), Clear Creek Golf Club (12.3) and Hermann Park Golf Course (11.2).
Battleground provides an all-around quality golfing experience, according to Galen Davis of Deer Park.
"The layout is nice, the grass is good, the greens are in good shape and the people who run the place are really nice," said Davis before a round at Battleground last week.
Battleground's connection to Texas history goes beyond the course's name. The marker on each tee describes an aspect of the Battle of San Jacinto that took place nearby. You'll learn about how Sam Houston's outnumbered troops, using a defeat at the Alamo a few weeks earlier as a rallying cry, surprised Santa Anna's Mexican forces in the battle that won Texas its independence.
The course opened in 1996 and quickly joined the ranks of the most popular in the area, regularly hosting more than 35,000 rounds in recent years. That trend has continued this year even with the economic downturn.
